Canton Delicate Ginger liqueur was originally launched back in 1980s by N. J. 'Sky' Cooper. Launched in 2008, the new, reinvigorated Canton ginger liqueur is the brainchild of Sky's son, John Cooper, who has named his company after his grandfather, 'Maurice Cooper', also a liqueur maker. The original 1980s Canton liqueur claimed to have been created centuries ago for the emperors of old Canton who "treasured the value of ginger" and was produced from six different varieties of fresh ginger with gentle herbs and ginseng, blended with brandy and a touch of honey. It was said to originate from Jing An Town, Doumen, Guangdong Province, China.Maurice Cooper et Cie claim the ginger used to flavour this liqueur comes from colonial Indochina (now Vietnam), and a ginger estate called Domaine de Canton. The distinctive 'pagoda' shaped bottle is designed to look like a bamboo shoot but is also somewhat reminiscent of a Chinese lantern.

Now I need to be clear about something: I love ginger. I eat crystallized ginger all the time. So a ginger-based liqueur is right up my alley. If you are not so root-spice inclined (yes, I also love horseradish and wasabi) this may not be the liqueur for you.

Every ingredient for Domaine de Canton has been meticulously sourced. Ginger, revered for centuries for its health and mystical properties, is selected from Asia. Baby ginger is specifically used for its distinct flavor properties and viscosity. The Ginger is hand cut, rinsed, and allowed to dry for several days, in preparation for being married into the overall recipe. Additionally, hand-selected Tahitian vanilla beans and Provencal honey are sourced and added to the recipe in careful amounts. The result is a flavor profile that is exceptionally delicious and balanced.

Made from Vietnamese baby ginger and cognac. Delicious and intense, with some definite heat from the ginger amongst a rich and creamy texture. The perfect way to spice up a cocktail, or enjoy over ice.

Domaine de Canton ginger liqueur was inspired by the French tradition in which sweet and fresh elixirs were fortified by fine eaux de vie and cognac. Spicy and aromatic elixirs became popular with the French during the time of colonial Indochine. Domaine de Canton is inspired by the subtle spiciness of the baby ginger grown locally in modern day Indochine. The result is a recipe which evokes an era of tropical romance and continental sophistication that is both elegant and timeless.

Under the name The Original Canton Delicate Ginger Liqueur the liqueur was produced until 1997 in Doumen, a district of the city of Zhuhai in the Pearl River Delta of China's southern Guangdong province, near Macau. It was sold in limited quantity in the United States before high-end Asian fusion cuisine became popular. In its original formulation, the liqueur's ingredients were advertised to include six varieties of ginger, ginseng, "gentle herbs," "finest spirits," brandy, and honey. Its strength was 20 percent alcohol (40 proof), and it was sold in decorative faceted glass bottles of various sizes.[1]

In 2007, John Cooper (son of the US importer of the original product, N. J. Cooper) revived the name and idea by producing a new ginger liqueur called Canton Ginger & Cognac Liqueur. Canton Ginger Liqueur follows a new recipe and is produced in Jarnac, France. The new formula is 28 percent alcohol (56 proof), is golden in color, and is packaged in a bamboo-shaped bottle. It contains syrup made from crystallized Chinese baby ginger, Grand Champagne cognac, neutral spirit, orange blossom honey from Provence, and vanilla.

Domaine de Canton is made in Jarnac, France in the tradition of colonial indochine in which ginger infused elixirs were blended with fine Cognac. Fresh baby ginger is cut by hand, twice infused with Grand Champagne VSOP Cognac, and then blended with vanilla and orange blossom honey from Provence. Its taste is fresh, intense, with interesting notes of orange and cognac and rich, yet clean finishing sweetness. Canton can be enjoyed straight, on the rocks, or in a number of fine cocktails.

Revered for centuries for its health and mystical properties, ginger is a versatile and unique ingredient. Domaine de Canton captures the very essence of fresh baby ginger. It is married with fine eau de vie, VSOP, and XO Grande Champagne Cognacs, which when crafted with fresh Tahitian vanilla beans, Provencal honey, and Tunisian ginseng add both vibrancy and dimension. To maintain the highest quality possible, Domaine de Canton is handmade naturally without preservatives or colorants.

Each bottle of Domaine de Canton begins with the selection of only the finest, fresh baby Vietnamese ginger. The baby ginger is peeled and cut by hand and then, in France's aquitaine region, it is macerated with a blend of herbs and spices to unlock its fresh essence. Domaine de Canton is made in small batches by hand and, therefore, mass quantities are not possible.

Humming for a tasty alcoholic drink to keep you warm during these chilly months? Ginger liqueur is the boozy beverage you've been searching for. Like other liqueurs, ginger liqueur is made from distilled spirits infused with herbs and spices and often sweetened with sugar (via MasterClass). This sweet, low-proof liqueur has been a popular drink since the 13th century when Italians used it for medicinal purposes (via Caskers).

Although ginger as a spice has played a role in the art of the cocktail for many years, ginger liqueur is a relatively new addition in mixology (via Drinkhacker). Distinct from its cousins, ginger ales and ginger beers, ginger liqueur consists of just three ingredients: alcohol, ginger, and simple syrup (via Giallo Zafferano). From this base, distillers and home cooks alike can create endless combinations. Because ginger liqueur can be made with various alcohols, including brandy, vodka, and rum, you've got plenty of flavor options with your choice of spirit, even before you add the ginger and other fruits and spices that give this delicious drink its bite. This holds true whether you decide to purchase your ginger liqueur or make it from scratch.

Don't think you're limited to sipping this spirit in its barest form. Ginger liqueur is so much more than just a cordial. Use it in cocktail recipes to replace whatever alcohol you'd regularly use, and enjoy the depth of flavor you've added to any drink.

Can't fathom a cold drink on a cold day? Stick with a classic warm and cozy hot toddy. In lieu of whiskey, add ginger liqueur for extra warmth. Like the gold rush, toddies have lemon and honey. Stir yours with a cinnamon stick and a wedge of lemon. The boiling water, the alcohol, and the ginger will help you warm up in no time. 041b061a72
